Not only do they benefit from their work together in their mentoring partnership, but they are helping the company foster a critically needed sense of connectedness in a globally dispersed workforce. Would these two have ever met or interacted in the course of their day-to-day work? I think it’s highly unlikely.

Like Alejandro, serving as mentor has been an incredibly rewarding learning experience for me, too. I continue to discover new perspectives and insights from my mentee. Every week I am inspired by her desire to grow and her courage to step outside of her comfort zone.

Tip: While every mentoring relationship is different, what helps make our remote mentoring partnership more personal is to make sure we always have the webcams on during our weekly chats. It was one of the conditions we agreed to at the very beginning of our partnership. Bad hair day or not, we commit to always show up on video for one another. It makes a big difference getting to each other’s body language and facial expressions.
